Which is good news. He'll need to restore the funding that Harper has
taken from them, and increase it to satisfy this voter.

Good Morning,
Thank you very much for writing to me with your concerns regarding the
funding of the Canadian Broadcasting Company.
As you know, the CBC is a crown corporation that receives significant
funding from the federal government. Government funding is crucial to
the CBC’s function as national broadcaster. The CBC is obligated to
deliver news and creative programming to communities everywhere in
Canada in both French and English because it is a publicly funded crown
corporation. The Broadcasting Act of 1991 affirms that the CBC must
guarantee equal quality of programming at the national and local level
in both official languages.
With the help of public funding, the CBC is also able to target
programming at the community level, showcasing local, Canadian talent
and highlighting important Canadian news stories. The CBC is an
invaluable resource for Canadian reporters, artists, musicians and
storytellers. The CBC is able to promote local talent because it does
not rely on private profits to operate. Today’s popular music and
television shows may help broadcasters turn a profit, but they are often
produced outside of Canada. The CBC’s mandate is to promote Canadian
content, and to accomplish this it must receive public funding.
I, and the Liberal Party of Canada, am steadfastly against any move to
de-fund the CBC/Radio-Canada, and have been calling on the Conservatives
to keep to their election promise and return previous funding levels to
the CBC. The Liberal Party has been pushing our “Hands off our CBC”
campaign since 2011 and as of the most recent cuts have ramped up the
campaign with targeted petitions and pointedly pressuring the minister.
The Liberal Critic for Canadian Heritage and Official Languages Stéphane
Dion, has also been quite vocal in the House, raising our collective
concerns for how drastic and devastating these cuts have been. Just This
month he spoke out and directly called for the conservatives to change
course. I have attached the link below to Mr. Dion’s speech

In addition, please feel free to sign the survey and if you wish, you
can even make a donation to the Hands Off Our CBC campaign and get the
petition’s button to wear.
Thank you once again for writing to me; I always appreciate it when
Canadians take the time to share their concerns with me. It is through
such exchanges of ideas and opinions that I can best represent not only
my constituents, but all Canadians.
Sincerely,
Justin P. J. Trudeau
